How to Clean Your Dishwasher Properly

After a party or holiday, the last thing you want to happen is for your dishwasher to fail. However, you don’t need to worry. You can easily prevent dishwasher problems just by cleaning it.

Handyman Connection® of Novi explains how to properly clean your dishwasher.

Preparing the Dishwasher

You need some common household items for this activity. For materials, you need distilled white vinegar, dish soap and baking soda. You’ll also need the following tools: a multipurpose cleaner, a soft rag, a toothpick, a sponge and a screwdriver hex wrench. Then you’ll need to empty the contents of your dishwasher after a wash cycle.

Washing the Dishwasher

Use a toothpick or anything small to clear away the debris caught in the spinning arm. Next, you want to wipe the bottom of the door and the dishwasher grating. These areas often attract a lot of dirt and debris, and in some models, the water can’t actually reach the bottom of the door or the grating. Simply wipe this area clean with dish soap and wash it with warm water.

Cleaning the Filter

If your dishwasher has a filter, you’ll want to remove it and disassemble it. It’s better to wash each part separately since dirt can easily get in between the small crevices of each part. We recommend you soak the parts in the sink while you clean the utensil rack of the dishwasher.

After that, you’ll want to run your dishwasher with vinegar. Just two cups of vinegar for one cycle is enough to get rid of hard water deposits. Finally, all that’s left is to wash and polish the dishwasher. Reassemble and reinstall the filter and wash it with warm water.
