How to Replace Broken Tile in 3 Easy Steps

Durable and low-maintenance ceramic tile can last for a surprisingly long time. However, heavy items can and do crack tiles if they fall on the floor. Fortunately, replacing broken tiles is a simple process. Handyman Connection of Novi explains how:

How to Replace Broken Tile in 3 Easy Steps

  • Step One – Put your safety gear on and use a scoring tool with a carbide tip to rake out the grout surrounding the broken tile. Make sure to apply enough pressure to remove the grout while being careful not to gouge the other tiles. After removing the grout, apply painter’s tape around the edges of the broken tile. It’s easier to chisel out the pieces if you drill holes with even spaces in between the tile’s broken sections.
  • Step Two – Use a narrow chisel and a hammer to gently tap out the broken pieces. If you don’t have a narrow chisel, you can also use a flat-blade screwdriver. When using your chisel, make sure to start with the chisel at 90 degrees to the floor, then use a 45-degree angle after penetrating the glaze. After removing the tile, use a wide chisel to clean all the old thinset off the substrate.
  • Step Three – With a ¼ inch-notched trowel, apply straight furrows of small amounts of thinset mortar over the substrate. Apply thinset to the back of the new tile as well. Set the tile in place and press down firmly, making sure that the spacing is even on all sides. Wait for two hours for the thinset to cure, then use a grout float to swipe the grout into the joints. Clean off the excess grout with a damp sponge, then allow the grout to dry for 24 hours.
