How to Pick the Right Door Hardware For Your Home

The door hardware you’ll be getting for your new doors is dependent on how the doors are prepped up. The function of the doors should also play a role in your choice. So what’s the best hardware for your home’s doors? Handyman Connection of Novi discusses more.

Door Hardware

The Types of Door Hardware

The standard selection of door hardware includes handlesets, levers, and door knobs. While all three essentially do the same thing, each one “performs” better for a specific kind of door and how they’re handled.

Entry Doors

For entry doors, the hardware you should pick should be the handleset. These are the most intricate and ornate of all the hardware, and they often boast a visually appealing and welcoming look – ideal for the main entry door. Handlesets often come with a deadbolt placed in the inside face of the door.

On the flip side, the backdoor for your home shouldn’t necessarily have a handleset, although it’s perfectly fine to pick this hardware – especially if it acts as a secondary entry door. We recommend installing a lever door handle for your backdoor since it’s more “industrial” than a handleset.

When to Use Levers?

As we highlighted earlier, levers are a more industrial-looking door hardware. As a result, they’re better off for doors that open up to the busier spaces of your home, such as your kitchen. Levers are also the ideal door hardware for your bathrooms, especially if you have elderly household members, since they’re easier to grip and open.

What About Doorknobs?

Doorknobs are the “general” door hardware that can be used in almost any door no matter how they are prepped up. But in many cases, knobs are better installed for the doors opening up to your bedrooms and other living spaces.

Dummy knobs are a variation of the doorknob, and as its name suggests, they don’t actually turn open. They’re stationary and will require you to pull on them to open the door. This is the ideal doorknob for cabinets and closets.
