When painting a metal component in your home, it is important that you first apply a primer. It is not always required, but it is a recommended step to do, especially if the metal is likely to come into contact with moisture.
Handyman Connection® of Novi, home of your local home improvement pros, explains everything you need to know about metal primers.
Why Use a Metal Primer?
Applying paint directly on a metal surface won’t give you a permanent coat. Once dried, it will easily flake off the material. That’s one of the main reasons to use a primer first when painting over metal. It is similar to paint but has a different chemical makeup that helps fill in microscopic gaps in the material. When applied over the primer, paint is able to bond and adhere right away.
Another reason to use a metal primer is because of its capability to resist moisture. Certain metals do not have an inherent resistance to water. Apart from flaking, oxidation occurs immediately upon exposure to moisture. This leads to rust and eventual decay of metal.
Metal Types That Need Primer Application
Some metal surfaces require a primer, while some don’t. Stainless steel, for instance, already contains properties that prevent it from oxidizing and corroding. Metal materials that are exposed to the elements need a primer first before painting over them. These include wrought iron, aluminum and galvanized steel.
Types of Paint and Primer
When purchasing a metal primer for use in your painting project, be sure to choose one that explicitly indicates that it is a rust inhibitor. Otherwise, it won’t help protect the metal surface from oxidation and eventual rust and decay. As for paint, acrylic or latex and oil-based paints are recommended as they bond well with a primed metal surface.
