Kitchen sinks are one of the most-used parts of the entire house, which means getting the right one is important. After all, it can provide years of reliable service. Handyman Connection of Novi discusses the features you should consider when choosing your kitchen sink.
Installation Types
There are several installation types for kitchen sinks. Self-rimming, or drop-in, is one of the most popular types. The sink fits onto a cutout on the countertop, resulting in a raised rim, which can be difficult to clean as food and other debris can’t be easily wiped onto the sink. Undermount sinks are installed under the countertop, resulting in lower rims. Flush mount or “tile edge” sinks are used with tiled countertops, and are installed flush.
Configuration
Sink configuration refers to its broad attributes such as one versus two (or more) bowls, square or round corners, and number of faucet holes. Don’t just choose the fanciest-looking sink with the latest gadgets; instead, consider your needs. For example, a small, single-bowl configuration is best for a small galley kitchen, while large, multi-bowl sinks work better for large kitchens that serve many family members. It should be noted that certain configurations may be more difficult to use than others. Sinks with angled edges tend to be more difficult to clean than those with rounded edges. If easy accessibility is a factor, consider a shallow kitchen sink.
Materials
Kitchen sinks are available in a wide variety of materials. Stainless steel is perhaps the most popular: it’s lightweight, durable and works with most color palettes. It comes in various installation types and configurations that will fit every requirement. You should also take your time in exploring other materials that may be a better fit for your needs. Fireclay has better corrosion resistance than steel, and can withstand scratches better. Stone sinks are made from granite, marble or onyx. While it is heavier than most kitchen sink materials, it exhibits superior resistance against corrosion, scratches and water spotting.
