Knowing how to do your own home repairs can save you time and money, especially when repairs have to be done as soon as possible. Read on as Handyman Connection of Novi lists the repairs that you can do without a handyman.
Toilets — Common toilet problems such as clogs and continuous running water have simple fixes, so don’t be afraid to open the water tank up and take a look. Toilets have surprisingly simple mechanisms, with replacement parts that are readily available in most hardware stores.
Faucets — Leaking or malfunctioning faucets are easy to do, and can be done with simple tools. When repairing or replacing faucets and other types of fixtures, always turn off the water supply valve, and clean the connections before proceeding with installation.
Light Switches — Many homeowners avoid light switch repairs or upgrades because they involves electricity. But with a few precautions and by following the installation instructions, you can replace a broken light switch, or upgrade to one with a dimmer switch. If you’re doing the latter, make sure you purchase compatible light bulbs. Certain types of LED bulbs do not work with dimmers.
Drywall — Once in a while you find cracks and holes in the drywall, which, fortunately are easy to fix. Cracks and small holes can be filled in with plaster, while large holes need to be patched with mesh tape first before applying plaster. It generally is a good idea to save leftover paint or wallpaper for this, especially if the interior color is a custom blend.
Tile and Grout — Replacing broken tile and missing grout can be done with a few simple tools. When installing new tiles, try to eliminate air pockets under the tiles, as these spots could crack when stepped on. Painter’s tape helps prevent grout and cement from getting onto the tile surface.
Window Replacement — Complete replacement windows come in standard sizes, and if your broken windows happen to be of the same size (or even of the same brand), then you can replace your windows without the aid of a contractor or handyman. If the window frames are relatively new, check if the replacement windows can be installed as inserts. This means only the sashes and trim are replaced, which can save you a lot of time and effort.
