Is Your Home Making Your Allergies Worse?

To most people, spring is the season for clear skies, sunny days, and blossoming gardens. Unfortunately, for some, it’s also a season of runny noses, constant sneezing, and puffy and itchy eyes. Allergies affect millions of American each year and while the causes and symptoms can vary from one person to another, they all share one thing in common: they all get worse during this season.

While there’s really no way to completely ward off nasty allergies, there are a few steps you can take to minimize their effects while you’re indoors. Our expert craftsmen from Handyman Connection® of Novi offer these practical tips to allergy-proof your home.

Proper Ventilation

Clean air is key to staving off allergens in your home. This means using proper circulation and ventilation as well as maintaining a healthy level of humidity. One way to accomplish this is with the use of air purifiers. Alternatively, you can also equip your vents and ducts with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters to reduce dust, spores, and other contaminants in the air every cycle.

Humidity Control

Mold spreads through the use of spores, tiny seed-like particles that they release to the air. This is one of the many reasons why you don’t want this fungal invader in your home. Experts suggest keeping your humidity levels between 30–40% can significantly affect mold development. This is because these organisms thrive in high-moisture areas. Install a humidistat to monitor your RH (relative humidity levels) and a humidifier/dehumidifier for full control. These devices are available as retrofits to an existing HVAC system.

Dealing With Dust

Dust is one of the most common causes of allergies for many people. These are typically comprised of dead skin cells, pet dander, or any other small particulate matter that gather over time on surfaces of objects. You can’t really dust-proof your home 100% but you can reduce their presence significantly. In addition to using HEPA filters, keep your carpets and furniture clean. Carpets are notorious for holding dust so it helps to have them regularly washed and dried, particularly during spring.
