A Chemical-Free Way to Clean Your Windows

Dark streaks and smudges on the windows are unsightly and can even affect how much daylighting you get, as well as your view. Fortunately, cleaning the frames and glass of your windows is pretty straightforward, and you don’t even have to use chemicals.

In this post, Handyman Connection® of Novi shares how to clean your windows using vinegar and baking soda.

The First Steps

First, sprinkle a small amount of baking soda on a wet dishcloth or a paper towel and wipe the frame and glass with it. The baking soda will act as an abrasive that will remove clumped up dirt and smudges. Don’t worry about exerting too much pressure as you clean, because the baking soda is soft enough that it won’t scratch the windows.

Using a clean and wet dishcloth or paper towel, go over the window to remove the baking soda. Since you’re essentially rinsing the glass, you’ll want to have a bucket of warm water handy to make the rinsing process faster.

Vinegar Cleaning

Next, mix equal parts water and vinegar in a spray bottle and use this mixture on the window, and then wipe it off once it settles. You may have to do this several times. Just make sure to wipe the glass and frames down before applying the second layer.

On your last cleaning, we recommend buffing the dry window with a soft chamois cloth. Alternatively, you can use a clean chalkboard eraser. Buffing the window will give it a nice, clean shine and get rid of any lingering streaks on the frame and glass.

When to Clean Your Windows

It’s a good idea to clean your windows at least three times a year. Windows generally have resilient materials that can shrug off stains and debris, but dirt builds up over time. Additionally, clean your windows after a storm or other inclement weather.

At Handyman Connection® of Novi, we can help you with window cleaning, repair and maintenance.  Call us today at (248) 255-4080 or fill out our form to learn more about our services.
