Digging through a pile of clothes to look for your favorite shirt is one of the most frustrating tasks, especially if you are in a hurry. To avoid this daily hassle, many people choose to install walk-in closets in their home. Handyman Connection® of Novi shares some tips on picking the perfect walk-in closet material in today’s post.
Solid Wood Shelves
Wood is a timeless shelving material that can be customized by sealing, staining or painting. Not all wood, however, is created equal. Softwood, for instance, tends to warp if used to store heavy items. Oak and cedar, on the other hand, are more durable than their softwood counterpart.
Medium-Density Fiberboard Shelves
This shelving material is not as sturdy as wood and needs structural support at regular intervals. It also tends to sag over time, which isn’t good news if you’re looking for a long-term shelving solution. Medium-density fiberboard, however, can imitate wood’s natural look. You may also paint it or leave it unadorned, depending on your preference.
Plywood Shelves
Similar to medium-density fiberboard, plywood still needs reinforcement when used as a shelving material. It is, however, sturdier than the latter and can also be decorated by different painting or staining techniques.
Wire Shelves
For a more economical shelving option, use wire, which comes in a variety of lengths, widths and sizes. This type of shelving material is often hooked under a shelf or installed at ceiling height. Wire shelves, however, aren’t good for storing small items because they may fall through the gaps.
Other Options
Whatever shelving material you choose, closet shelving system can either be freestanding or wall-hung. Freestanding closets need to be attached in some way to the wall to avoid tipping over. Wall-hung closet systems, on the other hand, are installed on walls using wall anchors or studs.
