5 Steps to Install a Chandelier

Many people feel apprehensive about replacing their old light fixtures, but it’s not as difficult as what you might think. Even without the help of your local contractor, you can install a new chandelier, given that you have the right tools and knowledge about it. Handyman Connection® of Novi explains how to hang a chandelier in today’s post.

1. Remove the Old Light Fixture

Before removing your light fixture, turn off the circuit breaker of the main electrical panel. To confirm that the power is off, flip the switch on and off at least twice. You can then start unscrewing and lowering the light fixture’s canopy to access the electrical box. Remove the twist-on connectors from the wiring.

2. Take Out the Electrical Box

Start by removing the screws that hold the electrical box to the metal hanger bar using a close-quarter hacksaw. Use flat bar, on the other hand, if the box is nailed to a joist.

3. Install the Fan Brace

Slip the fan brace through the hole and set it on top of the ceiling. You can then rotate the hexagonal brace until you feel its sharp prongs dig into the joists. Avoid over-tightening the fan brace.

4. Add the New Electrical Box

Use a slotted screwdriver to open the knockout plugs that come with the fan brace. Hold the box close to the ceiling and insert the end of the cable through the cable connector. Pull out at least six inches of cable and tighten the connector screws. You can then slip the U-bolt over the fan brace and slide the support flange onto the ends of the bolt.

5. Install the Chandelier

Trim the wires and remove chain links for the chandelier to hang at the right height. Thread the electrical cable nipple into the chandelier’s chain holder then into the fixture-mounting bar. You can then wrap the cable’s copper ground wire around the grounding screw. Use a twist-on screw to connect the chandelier wires to the cable wires.
