Green Fencing: Privacy Plants to Try

A “green” fence is a house border that’s either a standard fence with plants on it, or the plant itself is the fence. It’s a great alternative to the usual white picket fence and there’s a plethora of privacy plants that are great at performing this role.

In this post. Handyman Connection® of Novi shares a couple of our favorite privacy plants for your next green fence.

The Climbing Rose

This is a great option if you have an existing fence and want to add some extra privacy. As its name suggests, this rose climbs over fences – with the petals and leaves covering the small spaces between the fencing. On top of increasing your privacy, these roses are also very attractive to look at.

Bamboo

This is the quintessential privacy plant for contemporary and ultra-modern homes, and they are readily available, too. What’s great about this privacy plant is how good it is at obscuring your home due to how the leaves sprawl outwards. Bamboo also grows fast, is always green, and can even withstand cold weather. It’s the best choice if you want a green fence that lasts all year round.

Cacti

Far from comical and cartoonish,  cacti make great privacy plants for both classic and modern homes as they deter people attempting to cross your fence by the simple fact that they have spikes. It’s best used in drier and hotter climates, though, so do your research before trying this unique privacy plant.

Boxwood

This is a popular choice for pots and planters, and like bamboo, is hardy and evergreen. While they are naturally stout plants, you simply need to plant them on a tall planter or pot so that they function as a green fence properly.

These are just some of the many privacy plants you can try on your next green fencing installation. At Handyman Connection of Novi®, we’ll help you pick the right one for your home. Call us at (248) 255-4080 or fill out our online form for further inquiries.
