Contrary to what most people believe, a home equipped for aging-in-place is just as valuable to you now as it is for families with seniors. After all, you want to live in a home that’s completely safe once you reach your golden years.
Though valuable, few know how to actually start. In this post, Handyman Connection® of Novi lists four simple ways you can do it.
1. Install Adequate Lighting
Some areas of your home get darker than others, such as the kitchen, staircase and hallways. It’s easy to trip on something in these spaces. Just think how dangerous these areas can be once you get older. That’s why one of the first things you should do to truly make your home age-in-place ready is replacing your old incandescents with compact fluorescents. They last longer, are more energy-efficient and shine brighter than the regular light bulb.
2. Make the Entryways More Accessible
A few steps on the entryway may not seem like a big thing now, but it’s a big hindrance for older family members – especially if they have wheelchairs. That’s why one of your priorities in your aging-in-place remodel is to make the entryways more accessible. You can do this by completely removing the steps or install a ramp or slope to make it easier to tread on.
3. Reduce Clutter
It’s also a good idea to reduce the clutter around your home. It takes up valuable space, making your rooms stuffy and difficult to actually move around in. They can be dangerous too, especially things left on the ground. Now may be a good time to start reducing your stuff or investing in storage.
4. Make the Bathroom Safer
The bathroom is the most dangerous part of your home. Even now, a slip can cause a serious injury, so just imagine how deadly that can be when you’re older. The simplest way to make your bathroom safer is by installing a grab bar or handle so you can hold on to something while you navigate the bathroom. Installing non-slip rugs is also a good way to make the bathroom safer to move around in.
