Removing Spray Paint From Metal

Stripping spray paint off metal is different from removing paint from a wood or vinyl surfaces. It requires a different set of tools, as well. Since metal is non-porous, it isn’t difficult to accomplish. The problem is, you could end up damaging the metal surface in the stripping process.

Handyman Connection® of Novi explains how you can properly remove paint from metal items and surfaces:

Apply Paint and Varnish Remover

Paint and varnish remover is usually enough to strip paint from small metal pieces. Simply apply a generous amount of the remover on the metal surface and let it sit for at least 20 minutes. This will allow the remover to start eating away at the paint. Some soft metals, however, can be affected by strong thinners, so be sure to ask if the remover you are about to buy is safe to use on all kinds of metal.

Wipe Down the Metal

When the remover has settled, you can wipe the metal down using a coarse rag. Usually, the abrasion is enough to get rid of most of the paint. If there is any left, gently scrape it off with a soft-bristled brush. Avoid exposing the metal to water for some time, as the trace chemical will make the material vulnerable to rusting. If rust spots do start to form, you can sand them off.

To get rid of spray paint on larger metal surfaces, like a car, you can use carnauba wax. This wax can easily dissolve acrylic paint without damaging the finish. Remember to wash off any wax residue when you’re done, as it can cause the paint flakes to re-adhere to your car’s surface. For best results, look for “cleaner” wax. Test the wax on a small, discrete section of your car first.

With the right materials, removing spray paint from metal can be a simple task. If you need help getting rid of stubborn paint, however, you can count on Handyman Connection® of Novi. Call us at (248) 255-4080 to learn more about our services. We’ll even offer you an estimate.
