How to Tell When to Replace Your Hardwood Floor

Hardwood floors can do wonders for your home’s overall value, so it’s important to keep them in excellent condition. The problem is, wooden floors are deceptive. The visual damage you see doesn’t mean that you need to refinish your floor, and a smooth and uniform surface might actually need some touch ups. Handyman Connection of Novi shares some things you can do to check whether your floor needs to be refinished.

When Do I Replace My Wood Floor?

Since determining a replacement based on visuals alone is difficult, you can test the wood to check its condition. First, pour a tablespoon of water on the section of your floor that receives the most foot traffic daily. If the water forms droplets that stay on the surface, your floor is still in good condition. On the other hand, if it slowly soaks into the wood, that means the finish is wearing thin and would eventually need a touch-up. If the water immediately penetrates the wood, leaving a dark spot, you would need to refinish it right away. Afterward, completely dry the area with a towel and repeat the test on other areas to gauge whether you should refinish the entire surface or not.

What Can I Do If I Need a Replacement?

Inspect your floor and look for two floorboards that have a deep groove between them. Insert a sturdy card into the groove until it hits the bottom. Mark the place where the floor hits the card with a pencil, this serves as the measurement of the depth of the crack. If the mark on your card is less than ¾ inches from the edge, it’s best to hire a professional to handle your floor. Floors less than ¾ inches require more delicate and precise actions. If the mark is greater than ¾ inches, you can refinish the floor yourself by sanding off the old finish then applying the new one.
