How to Build a Fire Pit in the Backyard of Your Mount Pleasant, SC Area Home

Discover Everything You Need to Know to Build a Fire Pit in Mount Pleasant and Nearby Cities

A fire pit is a great addition to any outdoor space. It makes your outdoor patio accessible and enjoyable in the colder seasons, it is great for get-togethers, and cookouts. If you are thinking you would like to build a fire pit, our professional craftspeople want to share some of their favorite tips with you.

Preparation

Be sure to check if you have a local building code, or if you are a part of a homeowner association, insurance, and more if there are any restrictions to build a fire pit. You will need some supplies and tools as well.

  • Tape Measure
  • Level
  • Shovels
  • Tamper
  • Mallet
  • Concrete or Stone Pavers
  • Garden Hose

Fire Pit Design

Fire pits can range from different sizes and design, but they are usually three to four feet across and can be in a circle or square shape. You will need different kinds of blocks depending on the shape such as trapezoidal blocks for a ring. You can get creative using blocks of different sizes, colors, and shapes, depending on your design.

Installing the Fire Pit
  1. Mark where the fire pit will be installed with spray paint.
  2. Dig out the fire pit, removing sod and dirt to about seven inches in depth.
  3. Pack the dirt with a hand tamper and keep level.
  4. Fill the hole with crushed gravel to create the fire pit base.
  5. Wet the gravel and use a hand tamper to create a solid layer, a few inches below the surface.
  6. Lay out the fire pit blocks, keep them level and tap down with a rubber mallet or use sand to make them even.

If you are installing a fire ring that is stand-alone, go ahead and apply construction adhesive to the blocks. If you have a fire ring, make sure that fits first before securing the blocks permanently. Your adhesive might need several hours or days to cure properly. Do not use the fire pit until it is fully cured.

With these tips, you will be ready to build a fire pit in your own backyard. Get started and enjoy the results with a bonfire and more after your project is complete.
