Preparing Your Mississauga Home for a Remodel

Preparing your home for a remodel

Hiring affordable kitchen remodelling services in Mississauga can be much more convenient than attempting to do the job yourself. You can help the job go even faster and more smoothly by taking steps to prepare your home before the work begins.

1. Create a Solid Plan and a Budget

It is easy for a renovation project to run over budget and take longer than expected. Having a budget and a detailed plan in place helps to prevent this.

The first step is budgeting. Figure out how much you can afford to spend on your remodelling project, then allocate funds to set aside for emergencies in case something ends up costing more than it is supposed to, which is a common occurrence.

Next, work with your contractor to determine the different stages the project will go through and figure out a rough timeline for the project. Your plan should be detailed yet flexible to compensate for unforeseen difficulties.

While making plans, you should decide whether you are going to stay in your home during the project or seek accommodations somewhere else. The latter choice can be safer and less stressful. When choosing accommodations, choose a place that is affordable and convenient to your work and, if applicable, your children’s school. For example, perhaps you could stay with neighbours, friends, or family members for the duration.

2. Make a Plan for Your Appliances

During a kitchen renovation, you may be planning to replace several large appliances, including the refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher, which could present logistical challenges. If you have made a detailed and well-thought-out renovation plan, the replacements should arrive at about the time that you need to install them. However, if you have to put them in storage, make sure that they are properly ventilated. This also applies to any appliances that you may be retaining to reinstall after the renovation.

If you remain in your home during the renovations, you may have to downgrade to smaller, more portable appliances temporarily. For example, convection ovens and mini-fridges are relatively small accessories that can plug into 120-volt outlets and meet basic, daily needs until you are able to use your kitchen again.

3. Protect Your Belongings

As part of your initial renovation plan, you should make an inventory of all your belongings. This helps to keep them organized as you move them out of the way. It also helps to make it easier to file an insurance claim in the unlikely event of damage to your personal property.

At the start of the remodelling project, you should move as many of your possessions as possible out of the area where the work is going to take place, from the smallest knickknacks to the largest pieces of furniture. Not only does this protect your belongings, but it also creates a clear space in which the renovation team can work.

If there are belongings that you are unable to move, e.g., pieces that are bolted to the floor, ceiling, or wall, you should cover them before the work begins to protect them from dust. In fact, because dust can travel farther than you expect, you may have to cover items in areas of the house that are adjacent to the room to be remodelled.

4. Adopt a Positive Mindset

Be realistic about the realities of a home renovation project. It will be stressful at times, but if you have planned properly at the beginning, you can anticipate many of the challenges you will face and be prepared to meet them. Keep reminding yourself of the end goal and how much you will enjoy your beautifully remodelled new kitchen once the work is complete. Look for ways to manage your stress.
