Mississauga Carpentry Services: Signs To Replace Exterior Trim

Signs to replace exterior trim

It is easy to take the exterior trim of your house for granted. It tends not to be an element that draws attention to itself unless it is in really poor condition. However, intervening to correct minor problems before they become major could save you money in the long run because a carpenter in Mississauga could repair the damage more easily. Here are some signs to look for that indicate your exterior trim may need to be replaced.

1. Poorly Installed Siding

The exterior trim covers up the point where the siding meets the window and doors. The same person often installs both of them when the house is first built, so if there is a problem with the siding, chances are good that the exterior trim has issues as well. The person who installs the siding and trim is often also the person who does the framing, a job that requires less attention to detail.

Siding issues may be more obvious and easier to recognize than problems with the trim. If you do not see any problems with the siding, it does not necessarily mean that the trim is fine, but the siding may be the first warning you receive that the exterior trim may also need attention.

2. Bad Choice of Materials for Climate

The problem may not be with the installation of the trim and siding but with the materials chosen for them. If they are not appropriate for the climate, they may not stand up to weather conditions. Water may be able to get underneath the trim, which can cause many other problems.

3. Dampness in the House

If moisture gets underneath the exterior trim, it may leak around the window frames and get into the house. This can cause many other problems, such as staining and discolouration of drywall and mould growth. If the water can get in, it also means that air can get out, which makes heating and cooling your home less efficient and more costly.

If there is a positive to this situation, it is that moisture in the home may be much more noticeable than problems with the trim that only affect the home’s exterior. If you take action to correct it, you may be able to minimize the damage both inside and out.

4. Frequent Painting Required

Inadequate exterior trim may absorb moisture, which becomes trapped inside. Warmer temperatures cause the water to evaporate, but the trapped moisture has to push against the film of paint covering its surface to escape. Due to the increased pressure on the paint, it may wear out more quickly, causing you to have to repaint more often than would otherwise be necessary.

5. Rot

Water absorbed by the exterior trim also causes the wood itself to deteriorate. This often occurs in places that are partially hidden and hard to see, such as at roof intersections, under gutters, and behind metal trims.

Rot causes the wood to soften, which allows it to hold more water. More water advances the rotting process. It is possible to break out of this cycle with repair services to correct the problem and intervention to keep it from recurring, but only in the early stages. Once the damage advances, there is nothing left to do but replace the exterior trim.
