How to Install Kitchen Hardware

While our local craftsmen from Handyman Connection can take care of any household project or repair, we know some homeowners love DIY projects. For those that like to get in there and do the work, a simple and fairly inexpensive project is swapping out kitchen cabinet hardware. Cabinet knobs and drawer pulls can easily be removed and replaced with modern cabinet hardware styles, to give your kitchen the refreshed look you desire.

The Steps of Installing Kitchen Hardware

1. Measure for Cabinet Hardware

First, carefully remove all knobs and pulls with a screwdriver. One size does not fit all for kitchen hardware. It’s important to carefully measure the distance between the attachment points on drawer pulls, from the center of one screw hole to the center of the other. After, record the measurements so you won’t forget. When you go to your local home improvement store in search of the kitchen hardware, be sure to bring the measurements with you along with one of the drawer pulls or knobs for reference. Make note of how many you’ll need!

2. Fill in Holes

When replacing a single-screw knob with a drawer pull, a new pull might have a different spread than the old one. If this is the case you will need to fill in the original hole with wood putty. Be sure to take care to cover any uneven areas surrounding the hole with putty as well. Once the putty has dried, use medium- to fine-grit sandpaper to sand over the filled hole. This will smooth the surface and remove any excess. Use a tacky cloth to trap any dust, then paint or stain it to match the surrounding area.

3. Attach the Hardware

Time for the final step! Measure the location where the new pull or knob will be placed, and then use a wood pencil to mark it. Follow it up by lightly tapping a nail set with a hammer to create a small indentation at the marked spot. This will help keep the drill bit in place when drilling the new holes. Once the holes are drilled, you’re ready to attach the new hardware. Use the drill to screw each piece on, make sure it’s nice and tight, and you’re all set!
