What is the best way to regrout tile? That depends on what kind of grout you are using. Grouts are different in how they are mixed, what they are made of, their hardness, etc. For instance, if you were using a water-based grout or latex grout, it’s probably not necessary to do anything further for the cleanup process. It is recommended that you simply use a damp sponge followed by a dry rag to wipe up any leftover residue after about twenty minutes have passed since your last soapy wash. You may need to repeat this several times to remove all the residue.
If you had a solvent-based grout or epoxy grout, it is best to first rinse the area with a solution of detergent and water in a ratio of about 1-2 tablespoons of detergent per gallon of water. Let the area dry well before proceeding to the next step. Once you have cleaned off any excess resin or filler, you can apply more grout to seal that area and create a solid base for your tile work.
Use a putty knife, razor knife, or similar tool to apply the new grout over the substrate as recommended for whatever type of grout you are using. If you want to use a brush, toothbrush, or paintbrush, then you can apply another layer of grout over the brush marks. Grouting with a non-abrasive adhesive or an absorbent-based grout is recommended to seal all the tiles.
Once the tile work has been completed and all excess grout has been removed or at least vacuumed up as far as possible, it is advised that you take care of any scratches in the tilework. If there are scratches on your tilework, then you should apply a small amount of epoxy filler to those areas before setting your tile work in place.
