What Are Some Different Types of Interior Doors?

interior doors for your home

Maybe you have said to yourself, “I should hire a carpenter handyman near me to install some new interior doors.” If so, this is not the only decision that you need to make. There are many different styles of interior doors available. You need to pick one that is functional for your living space and complementary to your overall interior design scheme. Here are some popular styles to consider.

1. Panel Doors

Panel doors are a hinged variety, meaning that they need space to swing into a room as they open. They add visual interest because they are divided into panels oriented either horizontally or vertically. Panel doors can be used in almost every room, but they are particularly popular in rooms where aesthetics are important. A panel door on a laundry room or utility room may not add much because you may not see it as often, but it can enhance the appearance of bedrooms, bathrooms, and dining rooms, as well as the living room or kitchen. Exterior doors often have panels as well.

Panel doors are available in many different designs and materials. This makes them versatile enough to fit into almost any decorating scheme, contemporary as well as traditional. If you need functionality but don’t want to give up style, a panel door may be right for you.

2. Sliding Doors

A sliding door may be a good alternative for a small room that doesn’t allow a hinged door to swing inward. If you have a doorway that doesn’t already have hinges available, a sliding door may be the easiest to install because it hangs from a track above the door. Some people think that a sliding door adds visual interest to a room, while others don’t like the look of them.

Sliding doors are practical space savers for small rooms. If you want to be able to open up your living spaces sometimes and divide them at other times, a sliding door can offer you that flexibility. It can be appropriate for wide openings that would be impractical for a hinged door. However, sliding doors can be hard to keep clean because sliding the door open or closed causes it to collect fingerprints.

3. Pocket Doors

Pocket doors are similar to sliding doors in that they are installed on a track and open by sliding rather than by swinging into the room. However, while sliding doors stay outside the wall, pocket doors slide into a cavity within it. To put it another way, a sliding door is still visible even when it is open, but a pocket door seems to disappear.

Pocket doors are even more space-saving than sliding doors because they don’t take up space in the room when open. They are versatile in terms of their designs and materials, but if you intend to keep the door open most of the time, you may not need to worry as much about the aesthetics of the door itself.

Bathrooms, laundry rooms, and pantries are all small spaces where pocket doors may be helpful. Pocket doors are also useful in places where you sometimes need a room divider but other times want to keep the space open.

4. Glass Doors

The main benefit of a glass door is that a transparent panel allows more natural light into a room. A downside of glass doors is that they can mean less privacy, though using frosted or etched glass may help.

5. French Doors

French doors are similar to glass doors except that they consist of larger panes of glass that cover most of their height. While glass doors can be either single or double, French doors are always double. French doors can serve as a room divider while still letting more natural light through. As with glass doors, they do not always afford much privacy.
