Crown Moulding and Its Use in a Shower

Crown moulding in your shower

Crown moulding is a type of interior trim that goes along the top of a room, covering the place where the walls and ceiling meet. A carpenter in Guelph can install crown moulding for you in just about any room in the house. If you want crown moulding in a bathroom, it may be possible to install it. However, you have to make special considerations if you want it to last.

What Is Crown Moulding Used For?

In the days before construction techniques were as refined as they are now, the different pieces of building material joined together to make a house would sometimes come apart at the seams, leaving behind cracks. Crown moulding was originally intended to cover up these gaps when they occurred between the walls and ceiling.

What Are Some of the Benefits of Crown Moulding?

With advancements in construction, gaps between walls and ceilings are less common. For this reason, crown moulding often serves a primarily decorative function. Nevertheless, even if there are no gaps between the walls and ceiling, there may be irregularities. For example, sometimes when the wall is painted, the painter accidentally brushes the brush or roller against the ceiling, leaving behind a smudge of the wall colour. Crown moulding can cover up issues such as these.

Crown moulding also makes a room look taller than it actually is. Potentially, this could be of benefit in a small room such as a bathroom. It also adds visual interest to an area that often looks a bit dull and bland.

What Is the Difficulty With Installing Crown Moulding in a Bathroom?

Traditionally, crown moulding is made out of wood. At best, this makes it a challenge to install in a bathroom. More accurately, the installation may successful, but the moulding may not survive and function very well in the humid environment of a bathroom. Wood reacts with moisture by expanding and contracting, meaning that it could warp over time. As the wood absorbs moisture, it could provide an environment for fungi and bacteria to grow, which could eventually cause the wood to rot.

What Can You Do if You Want Crown Moulding in the Bathroom?

Traditional crown moulding is not a viable option in a bathroom because it is not compatible with the environment. However, this does not necessarily mean that you cannot have crown moulding in the bathroom; it only means that it cannot be the traditional moulding made of wood.

Moisture-resistant crown moulding is made of a polyurethane foam. In other words, it is a synthetic material made to give the appearance of wood while still being able to survive in a humid environment of a bathroom. It can also go in other areas of the house where moisture might be a problem.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Moisture-Resistant Crown Moulding?

In addition to being able to stand up to humidity, the moisture-resistant crown moulding material is also easier to install than traditional wood. This is because the synthetic material it is made of is more lightweight, making it easier to handle and lift to the required height for installation.

For all the benefits of moisture-resistant crown moulding, there are also some drawbacks. The moisture-resistant materials do not have the same strength and sturdiness that wood has. As a result, the moisture-resistant moulding may have to be replaced occasionally. However, wood is not an option in the bathroom, so it is either moisture-resistant moulding or nothing.

A Carpenter in Guelph Can Install Moisture-Resistant Moulding in the Bathroom

The fact that moisture-resistant crown moulding isn’t made of wood doesn’t prevent a carpenter from installing it. The installation process is the same regardless of the material used. Find out more about carpentry and other home renovation services from Handyman Connection.
