Why are Your Lights Flickering?

Why are Your Lights Flickering

If you’ve noticed that your lights are flickering more often than usual, it may be time to take a closer look. There are many reasons for this issue, from a problem with the bulb to sensory overload. A greater electrical problem may require the help of a professional electrician in Kitchener. Here are a few reasons why your lights are flickering.

Problem With the Bulb

Although it may seem obvious, your flickering lights could simply be due to a loose bulb. This is especially true if the flickering is only present in one light. Bulbs often become loose over time and lose connection with their socket, depending on which type of bulb you have. LED bulbs with dimmer switches are the most prone to flickering because LED bulbs are low voltage, while dimmer switches are designed to handle larger electrical loads. Dimmer switches also don’t pair well with fluorescent and non-dimmable CFL bulbs. Be sure to only use bulbs that are compatible with your switch.

Malfunctioning Light or Fixture Switch

Another cause of flickering lights is an inadequate connection between the light or fixture switch and the bulb. If you lightly wiggle the switch and it causes a flicker, then you’ve located the problem. If your light is currently flickering, flip the switch on and off to see if the problem persists. If the flickering stops, you’ve determined that the switch is the issue and therefore should be replaced.

Overloaded Circuit

If you find that your lights start flickering once you’ve turned on a larger appliance, such as your washing machine or air conditioner, the issue may be an overloaded circuit. This means that your appliances are using more electricity than the circuit can handle. If the flickering only happens occasionally, it may not be cause for concern. This is because large appliances draw current when they turn on, causing a temporary voltage drop.

If the flickering is happening frequently, however, there may be an issue with the appliance. Contacting electrical repair services can allow a professional to investigate and locate the source of your problem.

Neighbouring Usage

If you live in a neighbourhood, your home probably shares a transformer with surrounding homes. Because your electrical supply is linked to their loads, your neighbours using large amounts of electricity can cause your lights to flicker. If the lights are also flickering at their house, however, it may be due to an issue with your utility service. An electrician in Kitchener can help you determine if you need to contact your utility service for a repair.

Wiring Issues

Did you know that 67% of home fires caused by electrical issues are due to inadequate wiring? Not only can flickering lights be an annoyance, but they can also signal a much more dangerous problem. A loose and outdated wiring connection, which is often the cause of flickering lights, can lead to arcing. Arcing is when the electrical current “jumps” over gaps in the connection. Because each arc can reach 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, it can cause an electrical fire. If you believe that there’s a loose connection in your home, contact an electrician in Kitchener immediately to keep you and your family safe.

Although you can sometimes fix minor electrical problems on your own, these issues often require the attention of an experienced professional. Contacting a skilled electrician can give you the confidence that your concern will be resolved and won’t recur. Call Handyman Connection today to learn more about our electrical repair services.
