Investing in wallpaper is a practical way to add a unique charm to your home. With a plethora of colors, designs, and patterns to choose from, it can instantly change the look and feel of your interior. It also helps conceal surface imperfections. With proper installation and care, wallpaper can last up to 15 years. This makes it a great alternative to paint.

Any homeowner with the right tools and excellent attention to detail can smoothly apply wallpaper. Handyman Connection® of Eden Prairie shares three easy steps:
Preparing the Walls
It’s important to begin with a smooth wall surface. Prep the area by scrubbing your walls with a sponge and mild detergent, and then gently sand down the flaws. Using a putty knife, fill in uneven areas with a drywall compound. Let it dry for a day, and then sand it smooth. Wipe the dust off with a wet sponge.
Once you’re done cleaning, apply primer with a roller or brush to the wall to help the wallpaper adhere. Be sure to use a putty knife as a paint shield when working on the trim. Let it dry for at least two hours.
Creating a Guide
To avoid mismatching patterns, mark where your seams are going to be on the wall. Use a straight edge and a level to make sure the line is plumb. Next, be sure to leave an extra four inches at the top as you measure and cut the paper.
Application
Reverse-curl the paper to eliminate its tendency to curl up on itself. You may then spread the paper out on a flat surface, and spread the adhesive uniformly using a figure-eight motion.
Fold the ends of the paper in on themselves so you can have a dry part to grip on. Stick it up on the wall, and follow the guideline you plotted out. Be sure to leave a few inches at the top and bottom. Next, using a smoothing brush, flatten the wallpaper, and cut any excess using a utility knife. Repeat this step until all walls are covered. Lastly, press the seams firmly using the seam roller.
