How to Caulk Like a Pro

To “caulk” is a very common term if you’re a homeowner or even if you’re in a rental home. Caulk is a waterproof filler and sealant that you typically find in bathrooms, showers, garages, kitchens, and other areas around the house that may have tiles with the potential to get wet. Caulking also keeps air and small bugs out of your home. So you may find caulk around windows, doors, and other similar areas. If you’re looking to tackle caulking like a pro, the crew at Handyman Connection of Eden Prairie has put together a few steps for you to follow in order to get the job done right.

First, you need to choose the right caulk for the job you want to perform. A long-lasting choice is a permanently waterproof, flexible caulk that is 100% silicone.  This is likely the best option, as you want to make your work last as long and as strong as possible. Stay away from acrylic caulk as it can damage and crack easier over time.

After you’ve chosen your caulk, gather your materials and tools that you’ll need to complete the job. It’s likely that you will need a utility knife, a wire brush, painter’s tape or masking tape, rags, and a caulk remover solution to get rid of old caulk and just in case the caulk gets somewhere it was not intended to.

Now it’s time to get started. Clean the surface you’ll be working on really well and remove the old caulk that you’ll be replacing with your caulk remover solution and wire brush. Make sure to wipe the area clean when you’re finished clearing out the area. The crew at Handyman Connection of Eden Prairie recommends prepping the area a step further by outlining the area you will be caulking with tape so that you can maintain straight edges and to avoid messes.

Next, you’ll want to cut the nozzle of the caulk tube to the size that you desire for the thickness of the caulk. You can use a caulk gun or just the tube; either way works fine. Squeeze the tube into the cracks and crevices that you’d like to place caulk in. Work slowly but keep your motion fluid so that the caulk comes out nice and even. As the caulk begins to dry and within 5 minutes of the application of it, run your finger over the caulk to smooth it out. And that’s it!

That doesn’t seem so hard, does it? Make sure you fully clean your area after you’re done with soap and water after the solution is dry. Be sure to give your hands a good cleaning too! If you have any questions about caulking or would like to talk to an expert, give the crew at Handyman Connection of Eden Prairie a call. We’re here to help with any and all of your home maintenance jobs, no matter how big or small your project may seem.
