Anywhere that pipes and water configurations are concerned, as with a bathtub, you’re bound to end up with leaks. However, while bathtub leaks aren’t something new, it’s not something that you want to ignore for long as it can damage not only your bathtub, but your entire bathroom as well.
Here are the causes of the most common types of bathtub leaks and how to fix them.
Faucet Leaks
The next time you’re in your bathroom, try to listen for any dripping sounds. Chances are those leaks are coming from the bathtub faucet. Faucet leaks are usually caused by aging or worn-out rubber washers. If your tub faucet can be disassembled, you can take the washers out and have them replaced. However, if the leaks persist even after you’ve replaced the rubber gaskets and washers, the entire faucet assembly may have to be replaced.
Water Supply Leaks
Tub and shower valves are soldered together. These connections are usually pretty secure, but they can come loose and produce leaks if they weren’t properly installed or if the materials are old or have succumbed to rust.
Drain Leaks
Just like kitchen sinks and shower drains, bathtub drains are connected to plumbing traps which keep debris from clogging the drains and prevent sewer gases from flowing back up into the home. These traps can leak. Drain leaks can also be caused by faulty seals around the drain assembly. In this case, you can apply putty to the affected area.
