4 Creative Alternatives to Wallpaper

Wallpaper looks good, but you may want the walls to look more creative – something that truly reflects your sense of style. Handyman Connection® of Eden Prairie has got you covered. Here are our recommended creative alternatives to wallpaper.

  1. Patterned Fabric — If you want to keep the wallpapered look but want something with a bit more texture and customization, patterned fabric may just be what you need. You can buy fabric in bulk to save on costs. Most types of fabric can be installed on clean plaster using liquid starch and can later be removed and reused. Note that starch can be easily damaged by heat and moisture, so make sure you have addressed humidity issues before installing fabric on your walls.

  1. Paint — Paint lets you apply virtually any color palette that you want. You can also paint your walls yourself or with friends, or have it professionally done. You can get creative by choosing interesting paint textures and gradients instead of typically flat wall colors. Contrasting colors on perpendicular walls create depth. You can even take it to the extreme and have fun splattering the walls with different colors; just make sure you cover everything else before you do.

  1. Stencils — Stencils are labor-intensive and time-consuming, but if done right, you can come up with a unique wall pattern that can be as detailed as you want it to be. Make the stencils from durable materials so you can reuse them if you later decide to do the same to the other rooms or if you need to reapply the same pattern after you repaint the walls.

  1. Decals — Add visual interest to a part of the wall with decals, or cover small imperfections with it. Custom decals are affordable and can be made in virtually any color. Do not rush the installation process as it may result in blisters. The process is almost the same as installing window film, which means you can have it installed by a professional if you’re not confident doing it yourself.
