The Steps to Tell If Your Hardwood Floor Needs Refinishing

Hardwood flooring is a significant investment to make for your home. But anyone who’s done so would say it’s worth it because hardwood flooring can be quite durable and can last you a lifetime. Of course, that’s the case if the flooring is properly maintained and cared for. There are some instances where your hardwood flooring will require refinishing to get back its luster and prolong its life span.

In this post, Handyman Connection® of Eden Prairie discusses the steps to determine if your hardwood floor needs refinishing.

Locating

This is the first step in determining if the floor needs to be refinished. Simply gather your items (water, business card, pencil, and ruler) and locate the section of your flooring that takes the most traffic on a daily basis. Sections that have the most foot traffic are most likely the area that needs refinishing.

Water

Once you’ve located the area, you can pour a tablespoon of water onto the section. If the water forms droplets and they aren’t soaked up by the wood, that means your finish is in good condition and there’s nothing to worry about. If it’s slowly soaked up then it means the finish is wearing thin and will need to be refinished sooner than later. However, if the water penetrates the wood and leaves a spot, then it needs refinishing right away.

Business Card and Ruler

If you have two floorboards that meet imperfectly, there’s most likely a deep groove between them. Insert a business card into the groove as far as you can and use a pencil to mark the place on the card where the floor top hits. Afterwards, remove the card and measure the crack’s depth with a ruler.

If the job seems too big for you or the groove is too deep, it’s best you hire professionals like Handyman Connection of Eden Prairie to do the job. This is because to refinish the floors, the old finish has to be sanded off. Sanding is a delicate job that’s best handled by professionals. Doing it without any prior experience may cause some serious and permanent damage to your flooring so it’s best to let the pros do it for you.
