Fences / December 17, 2018
Fences are designed to protect your home and give you some much-needed privacy. There are various fence types you can choose from to achieve these purposes. Today’s article from Handyman Connection® of Eden Prairie shares four fence types you should consider for your home.
1. Wooden Fences
Wood is the most basic type of fence material used by homeowners. Wooden fences are commonly installed in backyards and gardens due to their natural look. Apart from being the most affordable fencing material on the market, wood is also known for its durability and being low maintenance. You can also paint a wooden fence for protection against damage and to prolong their service life.
Western red cedar, treated pine, cypress and oak are considered to be the strongest wood species for fences. Note that privacy fences have to be at least eight feet tall to provide adequate protection. Picket fences, on the other hand, only need to be at least four to five feet tall as they are primarily used to define property boundaries.
2. Chain Link Fences
Made of a sturdy mesh of chain links with a sharp upper edge, chain link fences are usually used for high-profile commercial areas, such as headquarters or scientific institutions. These types of fences can also be installed with a height of at least four feet for residential areas to keep intruders away and to keep pets from escaping. Chain links fences in commercial areas are usually anywhere from 6 to 20 feet high and often have live electricity passing through the wires.
3. Vinyl Fences
Vinyl or PVC fences are ideal for homeowners who want the appearance of wood but prefer a stronger and sturdier material. PVC combines the elegant look of wood, but it has better durability. Vinyl fences come in various designs and can be installed as privacy fences, picket types, rail fencing and box fence variants.
4. Wrought Iron Fences
The intricate patterns used on wrought iron fences make them the ideal fencing option for Victorian manors and large estates. Wrought iron fences can be used for both commercial and residential purposes.
