Home Maintenance / September 25, 2017
Tile is a popular choice for high-traffic areas like the kitchen and bathroom for their beauty and low-maintenance properties. That said, its main drawback for homeowners is grout. Grout is porous and light-colored, meaning it can be difficult to clean and prone to staining. Knowing what tools to use and how to use them makes cleaning grout a breeze. Handyman Connection of Eden Prairie, the leading general contractor, discusses how to effectively clean different types of grout:

Lightly Stained Grout
Not all grout needs harsh chemicals to clean. Lightly stained grout in particular only needs a simple bleach solution and a small brush. You can make this solution by mixing 3/4 cup of bleach with one gallon of water. Make sure to scrub the stained areas lightly using the brush as scrubbing too hard can damage it. Wear safety goggles and gloves while working to prevent the bleach from coming in contact with your eyes and skin. For tougher stains, make a paste with hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, and use that to scrub the grout.
Deeply Stained Grout
Deeply stained grout requires tougher chemicals to clean, and in some cases, you’d need to replace them. Go to your local tile store to rent the right tools for the project. Run the tool gently along the grout without scratching the tile. Afterward, use oxygen bleach to clean the space between each tile. Let the solution work for at least 15 minutes then rinse it with clean water. This ensures that dirt and grime won’t settle into your grout lines. When dry, apply new grout and seal it properly.
This simple project can be finished over the weekend, but if you don’t have time to spare, you can call Handyman Connection of Eden Prairie for expert services. We have the right training, tools, and knowledge to ensure quality results. Contact us at (952) 563-8200 to request an estimate.
