If you’re looking for ways to increase your home’s square footage, but don’t have the resources or time available to actually add square footage, consider some of the following recommendations. While not perfect solutions, these suggestions that our crew at Handyman Connection of Eden Prairie has put together will add a visual appearance that your home is bigger than what it actually may be.
Add Oversized Mirrors
Install oversized mirrors in certain areas, more particularly small spaces, to help create a visual appeal that the room is bigger than it really is. Mirrors reflect light, therefore are a great way to naturally enhance the look and feel of the room. Be strategic in where you place mirrors, such as large corners or areas with low ceilings to help achieve your goal.
Storage Areas
Get creative with your storage solutions to help decrease clutter and increase storage space. By creative multi-purpose storage areas, you will certainly achieve your goal in creating the illusion of more space. For example, transform a footrest into a place to store bulky items such as blankets, books, or remotes that can tend to clutter up a space.
Expose Furniture Legs and Furniture Arrangement
It’s recommended to incorporate raised furniture with exposed legs to help create the illusion that a room is bigger than it really is. It opens up the floor, which creates a depth and feel of an opened, large room. Also, make sure that couches and other larger pieces of furniture are arranged with a little bit of space between the walls. When furniture is pushed up close to the wall, it can actually do the opposite of what you are intending to do, so make sure that you are paying close attention to how your furniture is arranged.
Paint and Color Choices
When attempting to enhance the area and increase the visual appeal of the room, it’s recommended that your color pallet and choices should remain light rather than dark. Tie in the trim and ceiling to your painting choices as well, as it can help tie the room in together, to create a unified feel and an open area in your room. The room can actually feel smaller if you keep trim out of your painting plans.
Overhead Lighting
Overhead lighting can visually take up space, but can also overpower the lighting in the room and can make the room feel smaller. With a large, bright light in the room, it detracts from almost everything else in the room. Instead, incorporate soft lighting with various lamps and other lighting components to help keep the room lit, but to also help make the room appear larger than it really is.
