Nothing revitalizes your home’s interior spaces more than applying a fresh coat of paint. It’s an easy way to brighten up your living spaces and make it look like they’re brand-new, but it’s not exactly an easy job. So how do you ensure a successful home makeover? Handyman Connection of Boise lists a few painting tips for the prospective DIYer.
Prep Before You Paint
Before you start painting, make sure the walls are cleaned properly. Paint doesn’t stick well to dirty walls, and the last thing you want to do is paint over dirt or debris that will stick out once you’re actually done painting. Wash the walls with soap and water and let it dry out before you paint. Doing this makes the actual painting part easier to do.
Sand and Scrape Wooden Surfaces
You’ll also want to scrape wooden surfaces so the painting is easier. Wood tends to crack and warp over time, and these will jut out as imperfections on the surface. Sand the surface until it’s smooth; you’ll notice that it’s easier to apply the paint this way.
Buy the Right Brush
The kind of brush you’ll buy depends on the paint type. Go with nylon-bristle brushes if you’re using water-based paint and natural bristles for oil-based paint. Don’t mix the two up. Oil-based paint will cause a nylon brush’s bristles to stick together, limiting its effectiveness. Also, stick to one paint type. If the color you want is available in water-based form, stick to these kinds of paint so you have a consistent finish to your living spaces.
Finally, don’t be afraid to call a professional painter if your painting project is too much to handle. Hiring an experienced painter is often the smarter and most cost-effective choice in the long run.
