It’s important to be fire smart this winter. This is the season when you’ll use your fireplace and your home’s heating system. These activities all need to be performed properly if you want to stay safe.
It’s incredibly important for you to have your heating system checked by a professional regularly. This will not only reduce the risk of HVAC problems, but it will also improve your system’s performance and lifespan. You’ll save money on your home’s energy bills and at the same time greatly improve your home’s safety.
Properly Use Your Space Heaters
Space heaters can be useful, but they need to be used correctly. They need a good amount of space to be used without fire hazards. Don’t place them near curtains, flapping fabrics or near tablecloths. Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from the space heater. Always make sure that the space heater you use has an automatic shut-off switch and always turn space heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
Regularly Check Your Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Make it a habit to test your smoke alarms, and double check that their batteries are still fresh. These batteries should last you through the entire winter. Always place smoke alarms in the bedrooms, kitchen and laundry room. There should also be smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of the home.
