To Paint or Not to Paint: What Is the Best Option?

As a homeowner taking on a home remodeling project, you will inevitably come across a perennial question: should you hang wallpaper or paint over the interior walls? The answer to this question requires much thought and careful consideration.

Today’s post from Handyman Connection® of Boise aims to help you make the best design choice for your home by highlighting the advantages of each option.

Wallpapering

Wallpaper opens up endless possibilities for your interior walls in terms of patterns and designs. It can also hold its own against children with grabby hands. Due to advancements in digital printing, wallpaper can add stunning depth and offer impressive designs to any wall. You may also experiment with various textures and shades that will give the illusion of a brighter and larger room.

However, with advantages come certain drawbacks. Since wallpaper generally cannot handle moisture well, high-moisture areas like your bathroom and kitchen are off-limits. Wallpaper also presents challenges during application and removal as the processes are tedious and time-consuming.

Repainting

Paint is one of the most cost-effective design options for your walls, whether interior or exterior. It’s also easier to repaint your walls than add wallpaper. Keep in mind that most surfaces need to be primed before they can be painted. However, there are paint variants that have primers already in the mix. Ready-to-use paint-and-primer formulations cut down the preparation time for paint application. With paint, you don’t have to worry that much about making mistakes. You may rectify painting gaffs simply by repainting over the existing layer.

You can also paint almost any wall in any room. Paint can withstand high amounts of moisture in bathrooms and kitchens. You should, however, be wary of paints that contain high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These compounds are released as the paint is applied. The good news is that there’s a wide array of non-toxic paints in the market today.
