How to Remove Spray Paint From Metal Objects the Right Way

At first glance, spray paint might seem difficult to remove from a metal surface. Fortunately, you can make this task simpler by using the right materials and doing the right things. Handyman Connection® of Boise explains the things you need to know:

Tools You Need

Gather these materials and tools before you begin this project:

  • Two paintbrushes
  • Acetone
  • Plastic scraper
  • Plastic gloves
  • Old toothbrush
  • Eye protection
  • Lint-free rags
  • Respirator
  • Citristrip®

You will be handling chemicals and be exposed to fumes, so safety equipment is important when stripping the spray paint from a metal surface. You need gloves, a respirator and eye protection because the bits and pieces of paint can easily get into your eyes or mouth.

Paint Stripping

You’ll begin by applying a layer of acetone to prepare for the application of Citristrip. After waiting a few minutes, use a paintbrush to apply the Citristrip over the metal surface. Apply it generously over the surface, and then wait for an additional 30 minutes. Check for paint bubbles. When the paint starts to bubble, you are ready to scrape off the paint.

Use a plastic scraper to gently remove the bubbled paint. Do not scrape too deep because this can damage the metal surface. Wipe away the excess paint using your rag, and use a toothbrush to scrape off the paint in smaller and hard-to-reach areas. Repeat this process until all of the paint is removed from the metal surface.

Clean Up

You can get rid of the Citistrip by wiping the surface clean. For metal objects with many crevices, try shining a light over the object so that you can see if there are bits and pieces of paint you may have missed.
