Leaks might seem like inconsequential things that you can ignore, but they’re actually very dangerous – not because of the initial damage they wreak, but what they can potentially do. The worst kind of leak is one in the plumbing system as it may damage your home and drive up your utility costs.
Handyman Connection® of Boise discusses how to spot for leaks around your home.
Look for Pools of Water
You can check for leaks without using the meter by looking for pools of water. Depending on how extensive your plumbing system is, these pools of water can appear anywhere. We suggest checking the basement and seeing if there are some small to medium-sized pools of water. If there are, then it’s likely you have a leaking plumbing system.
Check the Leak Indicator
You can also check the leak indicator on your meter to determine if it is a leak in the plumbing system. It should look like a small triangular-shaped dial or a small wheel. If the indicator is moving, then there’s a leak. Now, you’ll want to determine if the leak is coming from the outside or within the house. You can easily tell whether the leak is outside: if the leak indicator still moves even after you turn off the main shut off valve, then it’s outside. If not, then the leak is in your home’s interior.

You can actually address most plumbing leaks on your own; that is if you have the necessary materials and equipment and if you can properly locate the origin of the leak.
