Solutions for Uneven Cooling in Your Home

As the heat intensifies the deeper we get into the summer, there’s nothing worse than an inefficient central air-conditioning system.

When you invest in the installation of an air-conditioning system, you expect it to cool every part of your home without any issues. Unfortunately, if you live in a multi-story home, one common problem you might encounter is uneven cooling.

What Causes Uneven Cooling in Your Home?

Uneven cooling occurs when some parts of your home have a cooler temperature than others. Usually, lower levels are cooler and upper levels feel like you’re in a sauna despite having a central air conditioning system in place. This might happen because of the following:

  • Old air-conditioning system
  • Ductwork problems
  • Vents and air filter problems

Don’t worry, though. Uneven cooling doesn’t mean you have to overhaul your entire air conditioning system. Below, we highlight five easy solutions to uneven home cooling:

1. Check for blocks in your air vents

Sometimes, the reason your central air-conditioning unit doesn’t seem to be distributing cool air inside your home properly is something blocking your air vents. Most of the time, these vents are on the ceiling or the lower part of your wall. If your home has the latter, a piece of furniture might be blocking it, preventing it from distributing cool air properly.

2. Switch your AC’s fan to “on”

A fan inside your air-conditioning system helps distribute air throughout your room. In your thermostat, you will see controls for the fan’s setting, including “Auto” and “On.” The former means your fan only works when the air conditioning unit is cooling the air. By switching your fan to “On,” it works even when your air conditioner’s cooling cycle is off, helping circulate air continually and even out temperatures throughout your home.

3. Check for leaks in your air ducts

Over time, cracks, holes, and tears may appear in your air duct system and result in air leaks. This means the air that’s supposed to cool certain rooms leak before being able to do so. What’s more, since cool air leaks before reaching parts of your home, your air conditioner compensates for the missing air and works hard to produce enough cool air. This can result in problems with your unit, such as a shortened service life.

4. Insulate your attic

According to Energy Star, the attic is responsible for a significant portion of air leaks in most homes. It means this part of your house’s structure lets cool air out and hot air in, making your energy bill skyrocket as your HVAC system compensates to control the temperature in your home.

This also results in the uneven cooling of your home, where the upper levels have higher temperatures than the lower levels. Fortunately, this can be easily fixed with proper roof or attic insulation. Roof insulation ensures that cool air stays within your home instead of leaking through the attic and creating uneven temperature.

Don’t let uneven home cooling make you miserable inside your house this summer. Try some of the solutions above or hire a professional to ensure that your home stays cool and comfortable all year round. We cannot do full system installations but we can do many of the smaller repairs listed above and could save you a lot of money.
