Rain does not respect trade boundaries. A single storm hands water from ridge to eave, into a channel, down a pipe, and out onto the lawn. Every joint in that path is a chance for the water to go somewhere else instead.
Homeowners tend to price those parts separately, which is how small faults survive for years. A family-owned outfit like roof duck in Manheim, Pennsylvania works on all three surfaces across Lancaster County for exactly that reason. This piece follows the water rather than the trade.
Think of one drop landing on the ridge. It runs down the shingle field, crosses the drip edge, drops into the gutter, moves to the downspout, and leaves through an extension at ground level. Six handoffs, and a fault at any one of them redirects the flow into the building.
Wind changes the picture. Driving rain climbs sideways under shingle edges and pushes against wall cladding rather than falling past it. That is why siding is a drainage layer rather than a raincoat.
The handoffs matter more than the materials. A premium shingle above a rusted drip edge still delivers water to the fascia board.
Interior symptoms rarely appear beneath the actual fault. Water travels along framing before it stains anything, so the wet patch can sit 10 feet from the entry point.

Trace each symptom outward before pricing any repair. Fixing the visible surface without the source guarantees a repeat visit.
Siding sheds most water, then relies on what sits behind it. The weather-resistive barrier is the wrap between cladding and sheathing, and it carries anything that gets past the surface back out at the bottom. Blocking that exit is a common and expensive mistake.
Watch the bottom edge of the wall in particular. Caulk applied along the lowest course seals the drainage path shut and traps moisture against the sheathing. Research bodies such as the Pennsylvania Housing Research Center have spent decades on exactly these wall-assembly details.
Dry rot in the trim is the usual warning. Soft corner boards and spongy window casings mean water has been sitting behind the cladding for more than one season.
A gutter is the shortest part of the path and the one most likely to fail. Fill it with maple seeds and the overflow lands against the fascia, the soffit, and eventually the wall below.
Two numbers help here. A 1,500 square foot roof sheds roughly 900 gallons of water in a single inch of rain. Downspout outlets should carry that at least 4 feet clear of the foundation.
Debris is only half the problem. Pitch, hanger spacing, and outlet size all decide whether a clean gutter still overflows in a summer downpour, and the consequences of clogged gutters build quietly over several seasons.
Scale and slope draw the line. Ground-reachable work with a stable ladder is ordinary handyman territory, and plenty of it prevents the bigger job.
A handyman comfortably handles gutter clearing and resealing, downspout extensions, fascia and soffit repairs, siding panel replacement, caulking around trim, and exterior painting. Seasonal rounds of fall exterior maintenance fall squarely in that group.
A roofing crew belongs on anything above the eave. Shingle replacement, flashing at chimneys and valleys, vent boot renewal, decking repair, and ventilation changes all need roof access, staging, and a workmanship warranty. Manufacturer guidance from the asphalt roofing manufacturers association is unusually blunt about warranties voided by unqualified work.
Look for the parts nobody photographs. A quote that lists only shingles or only panels is describing the surface, not the system.
Ask what happens at the transitions too. Where a porch roof meets a wall, or where two slopes meet at a valley, the detail is worth more than the material above it. A contractor who talks fluently about those junctions is usually the one to hire.
Water is patient and consistent, and it always finds the weakest handoff. Walk the perimeter during the next hard rain and watch where it actually goes. Overflowing corners, splashback against the wall, and puddles hard against the foundation all give themselves away in about 10 minutes.
Fix the path in order, from the top down. Repairing a wall while the gutter above it still overflows simply resets the clock on the same damage.
Sometimes, when the water was backing up under the lowest shingles. More often the gutter is a symptom and the flashing above it is the cause. Confirm where the water enters before replacing anything.
Once a year is enough for most homes, ideally in early spring. Press the trim and lower courses for softness and look for gaps at joints. Anything spongy needs opening up rather than repainting.
No, they reduce it. Fine grit and shingle granules still pass through most designs and settle in the channel. Plan on checking the run at least once a year anyway.
Water tracking along rafters or ducts before it drops. The stain forms where the path finally sags, not where the leak began. A moisture meter and an attic inspection usually find the true entry point.
