Cabinets are basically an essential function in many different places in your home. They can also be a fun way to incorporate your design theme. A very simple way to do that is by getting creative with decorative knobs or handles to bring your design ideas to life very easily. Our crew at Handyman Connection of Blue Ash has put together some pro tips when it comes to installing knobs and handles on your cabinets.
Choosing cabinets is the first step in bringing your storage solutions and design ideas to life. After selecting the perfect cabinets for your home, and have them installed, now the real fun begins. There are plenty of online resources to help find the perfect knobs for your ideas, and you can also visit designer stores to have a professional help you. Some trends that our crew at Handyman Connection of Blue Ash is noticing are the ceramic knobs with painted designs, or a brassy chrome knob that goes really nicely on dark cabinets.
After you’ve chosen your knobs, one of the easiest ways to install them is by using a template. You can create your own or purchase pre-made templates. All the template does is simply guide where you are trying to drill your holes. You’ll only need to do this if you are installing knobs or handles on brand new cabinets. If you are replacing outdated or old knobs, you can skip these couple of steps, and simply screw or drill in the new knobs or handles.
If the cabinet has a border around the edges, use something such as painter’s tape or a ruler to guide you to the center of the border. If there is no border, you can find a place about 3 inches from the front of the cabinet door. Test it out before you start drilling by seeing where your hand naturally reaches when attempting to open the cabinet door. These two activities will give you a great idea as to where the knob should be placed. After marking the area, you can go ahead and start drilling the small holes.
As you begin drilling, make sure the bit is the same size of the screws that will hold the knobs in place. You wouldn’t want to create a bigger hole than necessary and ruin your cabinets. Also be sure to work slowly so that you don’t end up splitting the cabinet wood. Taking these precautions will help you work efficiently and end up with a great end result.
After the holes are drilled, you can start installing your brand new, beautiful knobs or handles. Hold the piece over the front of the cabinet and insert the screw from the back of the cabinet into the fresh hole. Start by screwing it into place with your hand, and then tighten it up with a screwdriver. Once all of your screws are secured, you are all done!
