Over the years, the grout lines in your tile walls and floors can start to look dirty. One thing homeowners do not realize is that bacteria can hide in grout, and then show itself when there is moisture in the air. Once a year, you can either call on a professional from Handyman Connection of Blue Ash to clean your grout lines for you, or you can put in the time to do it yourself.
Open The Windows And Doors
You will be working with a relatively powerful cleaning solution, so it is in your best interests to aerate the room properly. This means opening all of the doors and windows, weather permitting. If the weather is not allowing you to open the windows, then it would be a good idea to put off your grout line cleaning until a better day.
Wear Protective Clothing
Since you will be using ammonia and vinegar together, the last thing you want to do is get anything in your eyes. Ammonia also has a way of staining and stinging your hands, especially if you have an open cuts. When you are cleaning your grout, be sure to wear protective gloves and goggles to prevent any discomfort.
Clean The Tiles Thoroughly
Before you start cleaning your grout, you need to clean your tiles first. You can use the standard tile cleaning solution you have always used to get the top layer of dirt and grime off of your tiles. Be sure to clean your tiles thoroughly, and allow a couple of minutes for the cleaner to dry before you start cleaning your grout.
Mix Your Solution
There are two approaches you can take to getting the grout cleaning solution you need to clean grout lines. You can buy a pre-mixed solution, or you can make your own. To make your own, put seven cups of warm water in a bucket and mix in 1/2-cup of baking soda, 1/3-cup of ammonia and 1/4-cup of white vinegar.
Apply To Your Grout
Use a paint stirrer to stir the solution until it looks like clear water again. Use a funnel to pour the solution into a spray bottle and start applying it to your grout. Allow the compound to sit on your grout for about three minutes before you start scrubbing.
Scrub Your Grout
If you are cleaning the grout on your floor, then you will want to invest in a pair of flooring knee pads. Use a grout cleaning brush with stiff bristles, and be sure to have your protective gloves and goggles on the whole time. If you want to get your grout sparkling clean, then you will need to scrub hard.
Cleaning grout lines, especially in floors, can be hard on the back and the knees. If you are physically unable to do the job or you would prefer to have a professional do it, then you can contact Handyman Connection of Blue Ash to find a professional in your area.
Another benefit to hiring a professional is that grout can sometimes become loose during the cleaning process. A professional will know how to finish the cleaning job for you, and then put new grout back in place. Cleaning your grout is an essential part to keeping your kitchen, bathroom or any other room with tile in it as clean as possible. Clean your grout at least once a year to eliminate bacteria and other potential health problems.
