Go Green: Ways to Improve Your Indoor Air Quality

When it comes to environmental and sustainability issues, outdoor air pollution is a topic that gets a lot of attention. What many people are not aware of, however, is that indoor air pollution is not only common but it can also have an even worse impact on your family. In fact, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than the air outside.

Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) can lead to a number of health conditions, such as asthma, sneezing, itchy eyes, and runny nose. With just a bit of work though, you can improve your IAQ, prevent health problems, and make your home more comfortable. Handyman Connection of Blue Ash shares some tips to help increase the air quality inside your home.

Choose the Right Flooring Materials

Several types of flooring products can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can be dangerous to your health. If your carpeting, for example, has certain adhesives and sealants that emit VOCs, it can trigger chemical off-gassing. This is the reason you should check with manufacturers and choose VOC-free materials, such as hardwoods with Forest Stewardship Council certification, for more health-friendly flooring.

Keep the Fresh Air Flowing

There are so many ways to do it, such as installing large operable windows and changing your air conditioning filters on a regular basis or installing the best dehumidifier. By doing so, you can enjoy plenty of fresh air and ventilation, especially when doing any type of remodeling that may release harmful chemicals.

Check Your Paint

VOCs are toxic emissions that can combine with your indoor air for years after the initial application. They are often present in painting products, as they help them perform properly and last long. Fortunately, there are now low-VOC and zero-VOC paints and finishes available on the market. Be sure to seek help from a professional, however, to know which products can suit your specific needs.

Inspect the Bedroom

Harmful chemicals might be present in your bedroom linens, textiles, mattresses, and furniture. As with shopping for paints, make sure that all your bedroom furnishings and products are low-VOC or organic.

It’s truly amazing how much of a difference you can make for your home just by following these four steps. For more ways to improve your IAQ, talk to our professionals at  Handyman Connection of Blue Ash. You can call us or complete our form to get a consultation. We’ll be glad to help.
