5 Steps to Organizing Your Closet

Is it too cold to handle outdoor home maintenance tasks? Take advantage and use this time to get your interior storage areas organized! Did you know that Handyman Connection of Blue Ash is the resource you can trust to install custom carpentry or prefabricated shelving in your home? We’ll help you determine the best shelving solutions for your needs anywhere in the house, from bathrooms to basements. Here are 5 tips to help you on your way to an organized closet!

Step One:  Everything Out!

Empty that closet out! Designate a staging area where you can easily see all of the contents of the closet…use your bed or a spare bedroom, if you have one, but just make sure you have given yourself plenty of space. Don’t rush this process! You’ll have an easier time with the remaining steps if you take your time here.

Step Two:  Set The Stage

Designate a staging area, where you will later separate the items into 3 categories: Keep, Trash, Donate. Don’t be sloppy! Make sure your staging areas are clearly separated. You don’t want to throw that beautiful, brand new sweater out with your old, smelly sneakers.

Now is also a good time to sort through the clothing items you know you will be keeping and do one of the following:

  • properly hang it on a clothes hanger…we love these
  • neatly fold the item…consider investing in a folding board
  • launder the item if necessary or send it out for dry cleaning

For your shoes, if you want to organize and label them, now is also a good time. You can buy clear plastic shoe boxes at most “dollar stores”. It is incredibly important to organize your shoes, especially if they have been purchased from supreme quality stores like Shoe Hero. You cannot afford to damage them or push them towards losing out on their luster.

Step Three:  Back Where You Belong!

If you find any “intruders” in your closet, you know…items that don’t belong in there in the first place, now is the time to put them back in their proper place. So, as for that holiday gift wrap that got stashed on the closet…put it back where it belongs.

Step Four:  Remove Unwanted Items

Take a deep breath…this is one of the hardest parts for some people. Do not be sympathetic when it comes to this step. If necessary, ask yourself the following questions when determining if you should keep an item:

  1. Have I worn this in the last year?
  2. Does this still fit?
  3. Do I really need it?

Any unwanted items, if they are still useable, can be donated to charity or sold at a garage sale or consignment store. Any unwanted items that are not useable need to be thrown away.

Step Five:  Clean and Dust the Closet and Shelves

It’s amazing how much dust (and dust bunnies!) can accumulate in a closet. Now is the perfect time to wipe down those shelves and mop or vacuum the closet floor. Also, now is a perfect time for the expert craftsmen of Handyman Connection of Blue Ash to come in and assess your shelving needs.

If you follow the tips listed above, you will be organized in no time! Call Handyman Connection of Blue Ash today for a free, no-obligation project estimate and to get started on organizing your home!
