Make Your 14-Day Quarantine Count: Improve Your Home

COVID-19 has changed the way society works here in Cincinnati. For instance, if you have traveled outside of the country, you’ll have to quarantine for 14 days to reduce the spread of infection. The same applies to when you’ve come into contact with someone who is sick with COVID-19. Self-quarantine is a reality most people have to face – and it can be an unexciting prospect.

While self-quarantine reduces the spread of COVID-19, it can seem like an unproductive time. But if you look at it from another side of the spectrum, it’s more time to do productive tasks, such as improve your home. You don’t need to call a professional remodeler or a company specializing in electrical service to work on your house, you can do a lot while you are home. Of course if you discover you are in over your head we are always here to help.

Some home improvement projects can be done yourself. Consider doing the following during your self-quarantine period.

Think About Changes You Want for Your Home

Now is the time to take a hard look at your house: what are your favorite areas? Why do you like them? Ask yourself the same question with the spaces that you love or do not. Are there any dead corners where you feel uncomfortable? Consider what you need.

For instance, do you need a space to work? Install a comfortable chair next to a window. Make sure you’re working space has adequate lighting. Add a standing lamp and a little stool to place some of your items.

Add Storage

Additional storage is always a bonus. You may not have additional storage cabinets or cupboards but you can still create space by using items that you usually throw out. For example, an old shoebox. Get creative with your storage options by doing thedecoration on your own. This also doubles as a quick and fun way to do arts and crafts with the children (if you have any).

Add a Charging Area to Your Home

Refresh your space by creating a spot for your belongings, especially for your electronic devices. With many mobile phones and gadgets shared by a lot of people, cables end up scattered everywhere.

Creating a recharge area gives space for your electronics, such as phones or watches, to be kept at the end of the day. Bundle all the cables you need and determine if some cables double up. You can then use a dedicated space to charge all of your electronic devices at the same time.

Apart from keeping your items organized, this space creates uninterrupted time with the family. By having your devices left in a certain spot, you distance yourself from social media distractions.

Clean or Refresh Your Yard

How is your yard looking? Fourteen days at home gives you fourteen more reasons to pull out some weeds, repot some plants or plant some flowers. If you have some leftover paint, paint the plant pots to kill time. A quick revamp of your garden will not only improve your landscape, it can also add value to your home (in case you want to sell it in the future).

De-Clutter

De-cluttering is the bare minimum you can do to freshen up your home. Clutter doesn’t just make your home messy; it increases your stress levels, too. Clutter is composed of items that you don’t have places for. To get everything straightened out, use your 14 days to find a place for everything or give them away.

As you sort through your clutter, ask yourself if you need them or not. You know you need an item if you have been using them in the past three months. If not, they are items you can give away or throw away.

The quarantine period need not be an unproductive time for you. As you keep yourself and others safe from the threat of COVID-19, you can focus on your home to kill some time. Apart from freshening up your home, it can also help you physically, emotionally and mentally.

Whether it’s de-cluttering or painting a wall, there are many home improvement projects you can do during your quarantine period.
