How to Fix a Door that Sticks

Because of its heavier weight and repeated use, an entry door will inevitably begin sagging or sticking. Below are some steps to fix that door. Normally, you would plane the rubbing edge of the door so that it can swing freely, but this is difficult and involves removing the door. Before you go to all that trouble, try the following steps. In most cases, this will cure your sticking door. If this project seems daunting or if this doesn’t fix the problem, call on Handyman Connection of Ann Arbor and we’ll take care of the job for you!

You’ll Need:
Drill/Screwdriver
Level
Shims
2” Screws
3” Screws

  1. Open the door to 90 degrees. Place a shim under the outside corner if needed to level the door horizontally. Use a drill or screwdriver to remove the screws from the top hinge on the door.
  2. Replace the screws with 2-inch screws or screws that are at least 3/4-inch longer than the original screws. Drive them into the original screw holes using a drill or screwdriver.
  3. Remove the screws from the jamb side of the door. Insert 3-inch screws in the holes.
  4. Drive the screws in equally halfway. The screws will penetrate all the way through the jamb and into the stud framing behind the jamb.
  5. Drive the top screw in tight using force if necessary. As the screw bites into the stud, the jamb may move back slightly; that’s to be expected. Finish by driving the other two screws in tight.
