Tips To Find Out If You Need To Refinish A Hardwood Floor

A beautiful and high-quality hardwood floor increases the value of your home, so it’s important for you to regularly check your flooring to see if they are in good shape. Wooden floors can be deceptive because a surface that looks smooth and uniform might need some touching up. Handyman Connection of Alpharetta explains how to tell if your hardwood floor needs to be refinished.

Tips To Find Out If You Need To Refinish A Hardwood Floor

  • Get Your Tools – For a simple project like this, you’ll be able to find everything that you need in your home. You just need to get a ruler, a business card, a paper towel, and a pencil. You will use these items to find out if your hardwood floor needs refinishing.
  • Locate The Area Of Your Floor That Gets The Most Daily Foot Traffic – This is the section of your floor that most likely needs refinishing. Get a tablespoon of water and pour it on this section and see what happens. If the water forms droplets that rest on top of the hardwood floor, then the finish is in good shape. If the water slowly sinks into the wood floor, then the finish is thin. If the water quickly sinks into the hardwood floor, then you need to refinish that area as soon as possible. Repeat this test in other areas to see if you need to refinish the entire floor.
  • Find Out If You Need A Pro’s Help – Find two floor boards that have a deep groove between them and do not meet perfectly. Next, insert a business card as far as it will go and use a pencil to mark the spot on the card where the top of the floor hits. Take out the business card and measure the depth of the crack using your ruler. If the mark on the card is less than ¾ of an inch from the edge, then we suggest calling a professional to refinish your hardwood floor.

These tips will help you keep your hardwood floors in great shape. To minimize the risk of your hardwood floors getting damaged, consider hiring a professional to work on your floors. While you are planning this home improvement project, why not perform other maintenance tasks at the same time?
