How to Remove Water Stains on Plaster and Drywall

It’s normal to feel worried when you notice water stains on your wall or ceiling. These could potentially mean a leak, and sometimes finding its source can be a little tricky. Of course, identifying the origin is critical in fixing the issue and permanently getting rid of the water stains. You might want to have a professional handle this for you.

However, if you wish to carry out the task of water stain removal, Handyman Connection® of Winter Park has some tips for you.

Removing Stains

Water stains may appear black, gray, greenish or whitish, depending on the cause of the problem. When removing these stains, the first thing that you have to do is to ensure that the stain is completely dry. You can use fans, heat guns or hair dryers to dry the stain. Afterwards, check for any signs of fungus. Generally, these can be removed by scrubbing the wall with bleach or white vinegar and a soft brush. If the mold is persistent, you may need to take extra measures to ensure a thorough clean. Make sure to dry the area before proceeding with other work.

Finishing Touches

Once the stains, mold, or fungus is gone, you can start repainting the surface for a more polished finish. You can opt for damp-proof paint if the area is prone to this kind of problem, such as bathroom and kitchen walls. Ensure that the paintwork is done carefully, with the first coat plain white and waterproof. Let the first coat dry before applying the toner mix and additional layers. If you want to further protect your walls from moisture, you can use a waterproof latex coating on top of the finished paintwork.

Deal With Water Stains ASAP

Ignoring the problem for a long period can cause irreparable damage to the ceiling, which will likely require the replacement of the damaged section. That’s why you should deal with water stains as soon as possible. Make sure to address the source of the water stains as well.
