Tips on How to Prepare Your Home for Spring

As the days become warmer, you should start making preparations for the coming season. In this blog, Handyman Connection® of Winter Park shares tips on how to prepare your home for spring.

Pace Your Spring Preparations

Spring cleaning sounds like a lot of work, but only if you compress all of it in a day or two. Minimize stress by getting an early start pacing your spring preparations across several days. By devoting one to two hours a day, and following a to-do list as you go along, you’ll have your home all ready for spring.

Start With Indoor Tasks

Put indoor tasks at the top of your checklist, holding off on outdoor work until the weather is warmer. You probably wouldn’t want to stay outside for more than an hour if it’s still too cold. There are plenty of indoor tasks that you can spread out over several days:

  1. Attic Inspection — Keep an eye out for signs of moisture intrusion. In addition to water stains, you might find clumped roof insulation, which indicates contact with water. Also, take note of the attic temperature. It should be more or less the same as outdoor temperatures. If it’s too warm, your attic may not be getting enough ventilation.
  2. General Cleaning — The dry air during winter makes it easier to vacuum carpets and remove dust from windows.
  3. Replace the HVAC Air Filter — Air filters typically require replacement as often as once a month during periods of heavy usage. They’re fairly easy to replace, though you have to make sure you’re buying air filters with the right size.
  4. Heating Shutdown Procedure — Heating systems, particularly furnaces, need to be shut down properly, as leftover fuel can damage the furnace the next time you fire it up. Consult the furnace user guide or your HVAC technician if you’re not sure what to do.

Outdoor Tasks

When the weather is good enough for outdoor work, you need to have the gutters cleaned and the roof inspected, especially if you’ve found signs of leaks during your attic inspection. In addition to gutter cleaning, you may also need to reapply caulk at the joints and seams. You can hire professionals to clean your gutters if you don’t have the right equipment.
