Water Quality and Plumbing Red Flags to Watch Out For

Plumbing problems can be quite dangerous. Aside from the potential damage they can cause your system, which, by the way, are usually incredibly costly to repair, they also pose a serious threat to your health and the health of your family. Issues in the pipe network itself can only be diagnosed by a licensed plumber. However, you can also usually tell if it has affected your water quality levels.

Our experienced plumbers and craftsmen at Handyman Connection of Winter Park warn of these red flags about faulty plumbing and what you can do to resolve them.

Visual Clues

It’s normal to see some mineral deposits (also called ‘scales’) form in and around well-used pipes, especially at the joints where two or more sections connect. However, these deposits never exceed a few millimeters in thickness even after years of water handling. If you notice an excessive amount of scales in any of your pipes, you are likely in need of descaling to dissolve the calcium deposits.

Rotten Odors

Sulfates are a common contaminant that reduces water quality levels in any home. Luckily, they are easily detectable due to their distinct odor that’s similar to the smell of rotten eggs. Sulfur contamination can be caused by certain types of bacteria which are easily eliminated by making use of antibacterial filter attachments to your plumbing system.

Bad Tastes

Finally, poor water quality can also cause some funny tastes in your tap water. Some tastes and smells are normal like a very slight hint of chlorine which is used for disinfection but they can still be unpleasant. Watch out for metallic tastes because this might mean there is mercury, lead or copper in your water supply. Contact your local plumber and your water company if you suspect any of these issues.
