Home Improvement and Maintenance: The Kind of Happiness You Can Buy

What makes you happy? Is it a promotion at work or a salary increase? Is it as simple as having a quiet weekend without worrying about tasks at work or home?

We’ve all heard it before—that money can’t buy happiness. If so, why do you keep on working? If you think about it, you really can’t buy happiness, it being intangible and subjective. However, you can buy or spend your money on things that can make you happy.

Researchers from the University of Cambridge found through a study released in 2016 that money can buy happiness—if you know how to use it. It’s not about how much money you have, but what you do with it, regardless how big or small it is.

With this in consideration, there are a lot of ways one can spend their money to be happy. You can travel, go out with family and friends, or take courses to further your knowledge about your passion. Another way to make money work to be happy is to “buy time”. This means paying someone else to do some tasks and chores for you so you can have more time for yourself and other more important things.

How Spending on Home Improvement and Maintenance Can Make You Happy

According to a study recently published in PNAS, people who pay other people to take on household tasks and home improvement projects tend to be more satisfied with their lives. The phenomenon is not also exclusive to higher-income groups. It was found that time-saving investments were directly linked to the reduction of time-related stress, and it is experienced by people from different income ranges, industries and countries.

The study was conducted by social psychologist Ashley Whillans, the study’s lead author, and her colleagues at Harvard University. In collaboration with researchers at the University of British Columbia and two other institutes in the Netherlands, they surveyed over 6,000 people in four countries, including the U.S.

According to the study, working adults in the U.S. reported higher life satisfaction when they spent on outsourcing household tasks such as general maintenance, which they would have done themselves otherwise.
