Deck Waterproofing: Is It Worth It?

An outdoor deck is a good investment. According to Remodeling Magazine’s 2019 Cost Vs. Value Report, as much as 75.6% of the upfront cost can be recouped with a deck. Waterproofing preserves the outdoor deck, but is it a good investment? Handyman Connection® of Winter Park takes an in-depth look.

Why Preserve Your Deck?

A wood deck can be vulnerable to the effects of sun and moisture, so it needs to be protected if you wish to get the most out of your investment. Depending on the contractor, a wood deck may come waterproofed, but with daily wear and tear from the elements and foot traffic, this coating will eventually be worn out. Therefore, waterproofing needs to be reapplied, ideally once a year. While composite decks are touted as “low-maintenance,” it may still need waterproofing.

Deck Waterproofing Options

There are two types of deck waterproofing: oil- and water-based. Oil-based waterproofing is more durable and can either be a coating or a penetrant. Coating creates a distinct external layer, while penetrants sit just under the surface of the wood. When reapplying waterproofing, coatings need to be stripped while penetrants will only need a thorough cleaning.

Water-based waterproofing is economical, easy-to-apply and eco-friendly, but it’s more vulnerable to wear and tear. Note that a wood stain is not the same as waterproofing, as the former only changes the color of the wood. While there are stains that offer waterproofing features, they aren’t as reliable as deck waterproofing.

Is Deck Waterproofing Worth It?

Waterproofing doesn’t just protect the deck itself but also your home. A deck that retains moisture instead of shedding it can raise the moisture level in your home. This increases the chances of mold and mildew growth on the exterior walls as well as in the indoor space that’s closest to the deck. This will likely happen if you live near large bodies of water.
