Bathroom Remodeling: Choosing the Right Shower Door

Adding or updating a shower is an important part of bathroom remodeling. With the variety of shower doors, it may take you some time to choose. Read on as Handyman Connection® of Winter Park shares a quick guide on how to choose the right shower door for your bathroom remodel.

Framed Vs. Frameless

Framed shower enclosures are the most familiar and affordable option, which feature metal frames that hold the assembly together. The frame is typically made of aluminum and comes in various colors and finishes that look great in most bathroom color palettes.

Frameless enclosures are made with tempered glass, which is strong enough to support even floor-to-ceiling installations. If your shower features intricate designs and textures, frameless enclosures are the way to go. Note that frameless shower enclosures cost more than framed shower doors, but there are semi-frameless shower doors that feature minimal frames for maximum glass area.

Opening Styles

Shower doors can be sliding, hinged or bi-fold. Sliding shower doors are probably the most common design and are ideal for small bathrooms that do not have enough space for a hinged door. The trade-off is that the walk-in space will be smaller; hinged doors, on the other hand, allow full use of walk-in space. Bi-fold shower doors are a good compromise between the two as they work in small spaces while allowing full use of the walk-in space.

Glass Finishes

Clear glass is ideal for enclosures that showcase the bathroom design, which is why it is more often the finish used on frameless enclosures. To avoid soap scum and water spots on the glass, you will need to frequently wipe the panels dry. Frosted or textured glass add privacy to the shower enclosure, and are best for family bathrooms. Partially frosted or textured glass add style and utility to the shower enclosure. Thanks to its textured surface, water spots are less visible, but it may still need frequent cleaning to avoid accumulated grime and soap stains.
